Large stoneware wheel-thrown plate, 14” diameter, cone 6 oxidation.
Onda-inspired slipware plate with amber glaze. Thick white slip was applied with a broad brush to this large, brown, wheel-thrown stoneware plate, and my fingers and combs were wiped through its creamy white surface.  Glazed with an amber-colored glaze I call “Tobacco”.

Faux celadon glaze highlights the hand-built peapods, leaves and tendrils of this springtime-inspired platter. A second firing to cone 017 was necessary for the application of gold luster on the rim.

Two clay bodies were combined in order to emulate the “peppered” appearance of a gas reduction firing.  Underglaze brushwork leaves and branches are punctuated with clusters of berries … dots of slip. Iron-saturated slip-banding surrounds the interior and exterior edges of the platter’s rim.

I altered the rim of this platter and glazed it with a toasty spodumene glaze.  The slip-covered face is glazed with a “fake ash” glaze.

The inspriation for this platter was American Folk Art.  I had wanted to make a platter that was “New England-y” and ”nautical”, thus the six stars (states) and the rope-like handles.  A popular reduction glaze, Shaner Red, was used on this platter…thick where it appears light in color, and thin where it appears iron red.
